Favorite/Memorable Strategies you've seen in a game
What's the most memorable strategy you've seen in a game of Mafia? And, if you care to reveal such information, what are your favorite Mafia strategies?
Before I explain this memorable strategy I once encountered, I'll need to explain a few Werewolf roles. I've explained them in the spoiler below.
In this game, I was the werehamster. However, on the first night, the Vampire Wolf converted me into a werewolf. Well, the game progressed on, and the wolves were doing well; none of us had been lynched yet. There were about 5 villagers and 3 wolves left, if I remember correctly, and we were being really quiet that day session.
Suddenly, another player, tired of the silence, claims that they're the werehamster. I can't quite remember what they were playing at; but part of their strategy was that they wanted to see who would counterclaim as werehamster. I didn't, much to their frustration. I figured out who they were pretty quickly: the Queen had taken advantage of their immortality in a really unique way.
The next day, they revealed they were the Queen, which made everyone else in the game groan in frustration. The townies ended up losing that game, but I still thought it was a brilliant "desperation" tactic. (Our wolfish tactic of "keeping quiet and not contributing" worked really well, because the other villagers weren't contributing either, and the Queen couldn't have a conversation if they were the only ones talking. Revealing themselves as an "evil" role started up conversation, so it was pretty brilliant, even if just for that reason.)

- Spoiler:
Vampire Wolf= converts one other person to a wolf at the start of the game
Werehamster= third-party role; cannot be killed by wolves, wins if all wolves die and they're still alive
Queen= a villager that cannot be killed as long as another player, the Servant, is still alive.

Re: Favorite/Memorable Strategies you've seen in a game
It was my first game ever and I was the serial killer. I really don't know if that was a strategy, but I just sat back and watched everyone kill each other off. Then I used my only kill during the last night phase so the serial killer and mafia would tie. It was fun to watch people argue back and forth and I voted with both sides.
Zodia, that seems like an interesting strategy! So in this version mafia are the wolves the mafia?

That does sound pretty fun, Yami. I've never played as the Serial Killer... Hm...
Yeah, Werewolf and Mafia have a lot in common; it's the same rules but the core power characters have different names.
Mafia -> "Wolves"
Cop -> "Seer"
Doctor -> "Bodyguard" (which could lead to some confusion, as there's a Bodyguard role in Mafia with different powers. Maybe I should say Werewolf!Bodyguard and Mafia!Bodyguard to distinguish between the two?)
normal Townie -> "Vanilla Villager" (Because alliteration is awesome.)
The core power roles have the same abilities in Werewolf and Mafia, but other Werewolf power roles are quite different from the Mafia power roles. For example, I read the forum's description of the Witch and Hooker roles, and they're very different power roles from the Werewolf equivalents, Witch and Prostitute. For one thing, the Werewolf versions are village-aligned, while the Mafia versions are mafia-aligned!

Oh wow! :O That seems fun to mix up the roles like that!
Yeah being serial killer is fun because you're on your own and you can watch both sides suffer. *laughs evilly.* :twisted:

Re: Favorite/Memorable Strategies you've seen in a game
I think my favorite game was a game I played on GC where I was the cop, and a mafia member counter claimed my cop claim. He ended up being a more convincing cop because he got the other villagers to lynch me and he won the game for mafia.
It was frustrating in the moment, but it was a great tactic to use and ended up winning the game, so I admire that.

@Yami:
In Werewolf, there's a role similar to the Serial Killer: the Lunatic gets to kill randomly at night. Unlike the Serial Killer, though, the Lunatic is a good character, aligned with the Village.
I could see a game with both a Serial Killer and a Lunatic in it. That would be pretty amusing to watch, actually....
@Thunderdome:
I can't remember playing a game where the mafia won by counterclaiming cop, so that sounds like a pretty interesting game...

While I didn't play the game, my favorite game was actually Natasha's Sims game on GC. Zodiac, you were the final mafia everyone was trying to find in the game!
It got to the point it was townie versus townie and it was a HUGE plot twist for everyone in the end. Including me who was reading through the game months after it had ended to get a better idea at how to play mafia on the forums before I started playing.

Oh yeah... I was really nervous at the end of that game. I really wanted to win that game because of the story aspects; I knew that if my character, the crazy cat-loving lady, and the townie playing the role of a cat survived to the end of the game, Natasha would write a special scary ending.
I didn't expect to win that game, but nobody was really suspicious of me, so I stayed fairly quiet...

I read through that game and didn't find you suspicious at all either! Staying fairly quiet was a good strategy in the end!
It's because your Sim and Lust's Sim looked alike everyone thought it was Lust. But everyone, including me, forgot about that darn cat (Light). That was a huge clue from Natasha and we all seemed to forget about that. xD

Re: Favorite/Memorable Strategies you've seen in a game
I would say that my favorite strategy played was in EpicMafia. It's your typical 3 mafia, 2 jailers, 1 doctor, 1 cop, 1 fool, 1 villager, 1 gunsmith, 3 oracles, (and two other roles i can't remember for the life of me.)
Any who, of the mafia, I was the hooker. So, when an issue arised where two people claimed body guard and 1 was dead, I suggested that we lynch no one and let the bodyguard kill his counterclaim. Basically, I sacrificed a mafia member at the beginning of the game, and became a "She's so townie, she can't be mafia." Then the cop whispered me their role, and told me everyone who was safe.
I won that game by hooking the doctor, killing the cop, hooking the doc, killing the bodyguard, etc, until I was the last mafia left, and everyone believed that someone else was lying about being villager.

Re: Favorite/Memorable Strategies you've seen in a game
Oh wow... That's awesome! Evil, but awesome, Natasha. I don't think I've ever had a game go so well.
One of the special events my offline group does is "Gypsy Werewolf." In it, there are two separate towns and a group of gypsies that travels back and forth between the towns. The gypsy team consisted of the Gypsy King (gets two votes during the day), a role I can't remember the name of... werecat, I think? (immune to being killed by Wolves, auto-killed if inspected by Seer), and another role I can't remember the name of (that had the ability to turn someone into a gypsy if they died.) The Gypsy team wins if one town wins and the other town loses; it doesn't matter which town, but one has to win and one has to lose.
I was the 'convert-others' gypsy, and the werewolves in the first town killed me the first night. I'm not sure how the wolves figured out I was a gypsy, let alone the one that could convert others... But by chance, I managed to pick the wolf that had killed me. So the gypsies now had a wolf on their team. Watching the rest of that game was very amusing... I can't believe how giddy I was despite being killed first night.
The gypsies ended up winning; the first town won and the second town lost. The gypsies made the mistake of telling everyone who was who in the first town; the Wolf on our team agreed to eat the person the Bodyguard would protect, and then when we went to the next town there would be no wolves left and the first town would win. The Seer was a jerk and killed our Werecat for no reason though. That was irritating... :/ We shouldn't have told the village who our werecat was.

Re: Favorite/Memorable Strategies you've seen in a game
I'm planning on hosting the game I described on the Galaxy Cauldron forums first. In the future, when Intermediate and Expert-Level GM signups open, I'll reuse some of the power roles from the Galaxy Cauldron game on this forum.
However, if the mods of this website don't mind, I'd like to keep using Werewolf terms, even in the upcoming Beginner-level game. I'll understand if the mods don't want GMs to use two separate terms for the same roles, though, as it can get a little confusing.

I would prefer if you created a list of those roles and their descriptions so we can add them to our roles list. I'd prefer to use roles that are currently named/described in the game. We have new players like Senshirei who might get a little lost seeing as this will be her first game.

Re: Favorite/Memorable Strategies you've seen in a game
Alright, I could create a list. Because of the similarities between certain roles (Wolves being the same as Mafia members, for etc.) and the fact that certain roles have the same name but different functions (Mafia's Witch vs Werewolves' Witch), could the list be incorporated as a second post on the Roles thread? That is, as opposed to being merged into the first post.

Zodia, what we can do is post an amendment to the role list, if you get me the list of werewolf roles/rules, I can post it tonight when I get home. That way if you wanted to host a wolf game, we'd have the info for people to learn about it.

when playing on GC, me and light were the last two maifa and he convinced almost everyone he was the cop when after the real cop had come out. It was the funniest thing Ever, we were laughing about it on the talk area for the maifa.

Lol! I loved how you and Light performed. I felt so bad for Thunder. He was literally seething through the seams that night!
I felt bad for him, he was like "RAWWWWWRRRR!!!"
It was your first time as mafia, wasn't it Swifty?
